PRIVACY POLICY · LAST UPDATED MAR 14, 2026

Your focus is yours.
So is your data.

Brainn helps you take your hours back. To do that, we have to be the kind of company you'd actually trust your screen with. This page is the long version of one promise: we don't collect your data, and we don't share it with anyone.

▸ OUR PRIVACY PRINCIPLE
Privacy by design. Your study activity, blocked content, and browsing patterns are processed entirely on your device — and never transmitted to our servers, partners, or anyone else.
00 · THE TL;DR

If you only read one section, read this.

Two columns, in plain English. The page below has the full version.

We don't collect

  • Your browsing history
  • Which sites or apps you blocked
  • Screenshots, images, or screen recordings
  • Your location
  • Device identifiers used for tracking
  • Anything for advertising

We do collect (minimal)

  • Your email — for login and recovery only
  • Subscription status — for premium features
  • Quiet Room progress — only if you opt in
  • Anonymous crash reports — opt-in
We do not sell, rent, license, or trade your personal information. Not now, not ever.
01 · INFORMATION WE COLLECT

The minimum we need to log you in.

Account information

When you create a Brainn account, we collect:

  • Email address — for authentication, password recovery, and important service notifications.
  • Display name (optional) — for personalization within the app and Quiet Rooms.
  • User ID — a unique identifier assigned to your account.
  • Authentication token — managed securely by Firebase Authentication.

Subscription & billing

If you upgrade to Brainn Pro through Google Play or the App Store:

  • Purchase history — managed entirely by Google Play / App Store.
  • Subscription status — verified via the store's billing API.
  • Receipt tokens — used to validate your subscription.

We never store your card, payment method, or any financial information. All payments are handled by Google Play / App Store.

Quiet Rooms & challenges

If you opt into a Quiet Room or shared challenge, we sync only:

  • Challenge progress — your focus minutes, anonymized to a number.
  • Public display name — visible to other room participants. You control this.
  • Challenge ID — to join and track the room.

We do not sync what you blocked, what you studied, or which apps you used.

02 · WHAT NEVER LEAVES YOUR DEVICE

The interesting stuff stays with you.

The data that actually powers Brainn — the part that knows your study patterns and what's pulling you down — is processed and stored only on your device. It is never uploaded, sold, shared, or seen by us.

  • Blocked content detection — URLs, app usage patterns, content analysis.
  • NSFW & distraction detection results — all image and content analysis happens on-device using on-device ML models.
  • App usage statistics — time spent, apps monitored, blocking events.
  • Block settings — your custom rules, schedules, and shield preferences.
  • Streak data — your progress and morning-question history.
  • Sleep schedule — your custom sleep mode settings.
  • Weekly mirror stats — focus time, slip time, all aggregations.
03 · HOW PROCESSING WORKS

On your phone. Full stop.

All content detection and blocking happens directly on your device:

  • Accessibility / Screen Time service — monitors screen content locally to detect and block distractions.
  • Distraction detection — on-device ML models analyze content without sending anything to a server.
  • URL filtering — pattern matching and keyword detection occurs locally.
  • Block overlays — displayed directly from device storage.

Server-side processing (minimal)

Our backend servers only handle:

  • User authentication (via Firebase).
  • Subscription validation (via Google Play / App Store).
  • Quiet Room synchronization (challenge IDs and progress numbers only).
  • Anonymous, opt-in crash reporting.
04 · THIRD-PARTY SERVICES

A short, deliberate list.

We only use third-party services where they're strictly necessary, and we choose ones that share our privacy posture.

Firebase (Google)

  • Purpose — secure user authentication and account management.
  • Data shared — email address, user ID, authentication tokens.
  • Privacy policyfirebase.google.com/support/privacy

Google Play / App Store

  • Purpose — optional social login, subscription management.
  • Data shared — your store account email (only if you choose social sign-in), subscription status.
We do not use analytics services, ad networks, social tracking pixels, or any other third-party data collection.
05 · PERMISSIONS

What we ask for, and exactly why.

Brainn requests only the permissions it needs to shield your phone. Each one stays on your device.

PermissionPurposeHow we use it
Accessibility / Screen Time Content detection Monitors on-screen content locally to block distractions in real time. Nothing is uploaded.
System alert window Block overlays Displays the block screen when a distraction is detected.
Internet access Auth & sync Required only for login, subscription validation, and Quiet Room sync.
Usage statistics App monitoring Identifies which apps are open so we can selectively block them. Stays on-device.
Foreground service Persistent shield Keeps Brainn protection active in the background when a session is running.
Notifications Morning question, sessions Sends the morning question, focus-session prompts, and weekly mirror — nothing else.

We never use these permissions to track you, share your data, or serve advertisements.

06 · YOUR RIGHTS

You're in control. Always.

Access your data

You can view your account information, subscription status, and on-device statistics through the app's Profile → Data section.

Delete your account

You can permanently delete your account at any time. Open Brainn → ProfileSettingsAccountDelete account. Confirm, and:

  • Your email, display name, and user ID are permanently removed from our servers.
  • All cloud-synced data (Quiet Room progress) is deleted.
  • Subscription records are removed (subject to store record-keeping).
  • On-device data remains until you uninstall the app.

Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

Data portability

Since your blocking data lives on your device, you can export your streak data, focus history, and weekly mirror as CSV from Profile → Export.

07 · STORAGE & SECURITY

How we keep what little we hold.

On your device

  • All blocking data, statistics, and settings live in encrypted local databases.
  • iOS uses Core Data with file-level encryption; Android uses Room with SQLite encryption.
  • Data is accessible only to the Brainn app under device-level security.

In the cloud (minimal)

  • Only authentication tokens and subscription status sit in Firebase.
  • All data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS / TLS 1.3).
  • Firebase's data centers comply with industry security standards (SOC 2, ISO 27001).
08 · INTERNATIONAL USERS

Wherever you study from.

Our services are primarily hosted in the United States and India through Firebase / Google Cloud Platform. If you access Brainn from outside these regions, your information may be transferred to and processed there.

EU / EEA users

  • Firebase complies with GDPR.
  • Data transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs).
  • You have full rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and portability.

California users (CCPA)

We do not sell your personal information — and we never have. You have the right to request deletion of your data; see "Delete your account" above.

Children

Brainn is built for students aged 13 and up. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has signed up, contact us and we'll remove their account immediately.

09 · CONTACT US

Questions, requests, ghost stories.

If anything on this page is unclear, or you want to exercise any of the rights above, write to us. A real person reads every email.
